In the present heliogravures, building structures, architectural decorations and contour lines are condensed. The individual motifs interlock, overlap and connect. They all originate from photographs taken on various trips to Egypt and Morocco. When translated into heliogravure, they change their character, lose their photographically "material" body and gain in transparency and graphic conciseness in return. Apparently engraved and embossed in the paper are also characters, hieroglyphics from the pillars of the Medinet Habu Temple, which have an ambiguous effect as information carriers and stores of knowledge, as linguistic signs and as decorative ornaments. The empty spaces between the motifs serve to locate them in space and time. Although printed one after the other and one on top of the other, they appear at the same time next to and inside each other. By recalling the previous photographs, the heliogravure always depicts the process of their creation. This becomes part of my endeavour to capture in the picture as long a period as possible without beginning and end. This is what the name Memphis stands for. Beginning and end of the capital of the pharaohs, founded in the Old Kingdom, are left to our imagination. (C.H.)

The photographer became known for her portrait series. In earlier VFO editions, the motifs (with one exception) were always landscapes, as are now the new heliogravures. The pictures are from the 23-part photo series "Heaven and Earth", which the artist took during ten years of travelling. She reduces the landscapes to the elementary, to sky, earth and water; the latter in different forms: Sea, lake, fog, clouds. A melancholy tone runs through the series, an expression of an occupation with the fragility of the earth's resources. But the photographer is always concerned with a "visual lust", with astonishment at what is seen, with beauty, with the mysterious that shimmers behind the supposedly simple. Barbara Davatz's pictures, whether portraits or views, are characterized by formal austerity, clarity, calm and a certain simplicity - a poetic uneventfulness.

After the body and headstock, the pickguard is the most important design element on the guitar. Originally it was less a design element than a profane protection against damage by picks. Luigi Archetti has selected twelve different pickguards for the present group and printed them on hand-made paper. The individual motifs bear a name as their title, which refers to certain rock 'n' roll guitarists. Since these are "only" first names, however, this attribution remains mere speculation. Luigi Archetti works at the interface between art and music. In his media-layered work he explores constructive interferences of these two areas and amazes with immensely poetic worlds of sound and images. His work as a musician and visual artist cannot be sharply separated, his thinking is visually and sonically influenced. The vocabulary of music manifests itself not only in the ideas and implementation of the works, but also in the direct use of objects, concepts and sign systems from this genre. This is especially true for the graphic series "PICKGUARDS", which captivates by its concentrated reduction, which carries the "sound" in a hidden yet visible way.
