William Hamilton served as a British diplomat at the court of the Kingdom of Naples from 1764 to 1799, during which time he intensively explored the Italian volcanoes. His life became the subject of a novel by Susan Sontag in 1982 under the title The Volcano Lover. In it, she recounts Hamilton's extravagant life against the background of the explosive political mood in Naples at the time, whereby the volcano, as an object that is both fascinating and bubbling at the same time, repeatedly takes on a symbolic character for the current situation.
In the silkscreens by Sebastian Utzni, this symbol is transferred to the present day: We are again in a fascinating, yet seething time, in a world situation that can take rapid, unforeseen turns and explode at any time. I have a volcano inside me: Nel petto un Vesuvio d'avere mi par calls Dorabella in Mozart's opera Così fan tutte. The volcano motifs are printed from the brownish-red material of the rubbing surface of matchboxes. In terms of colour, it is almost classical, but these tourist motifs also have a disturbingly meditative effect. One could take a match and destroy the idyll.
