The originals for the two lithographs are taken from the Internet. They are pictures that were exchanged in a chat room. The person depicted does not have to be identical with the sender. Creatively designed "identities" are created in virtual space. As diffuse and uncertain as the provenance of the Internet images may be, Jean Crotti draws the young men in a blurred and unsharp manner. To present oneself, to offer oneself, to be someone else: on both screens virtual reality offers space for wishful thinking that can be both deterrent and fascinating. "Jean Crotti's drawings bear witness to a ceaseless exploration of the human figure and its possible representations. His portraits of men or young people are usually drawn with coloured pencil on disposable material. The contrast between the cheap painting support and the subtle stroke, between the uneven surface and the haunting delicacy of the gesture underlines the strange and fascinating beauty of these people - they seem to surrender to our gaze and yet disappear."
