In the now fourth collaboration of Edition VFO with the Grisons artist Not Vital, a well-known sculptural-architectural narrative of the artist is translated into the two-dimensional plane by means of aquatint and white gold.

The "House to Watch the Sunset" has already been built on three continents. Not Vital's working method was described in a recent monograph with the term "SCARCH", a neologism composed of the words "sculpture" and "architecture". The term refers to the artistic and architectural living spaces created by the artist, which serve both a social and a transcendental purpose, in this case the observation of the sunset.

For Not Vital, the importance of symbolism lies in signs, numbers and local materials, such as wood, clay, aluminium or gold, with which his works are made. It is not without reason that the sheet was published in the dimensions of 39 x 39 cm and an edition of 39, as the three floors of the house are each approached by three staircases, each with 13, 26 or 39 steps.

This is the third Edition Not Vitals for the Edition VFO. The artist as well as the Edition VFO, you can tell, have the same vintage and celebrate a round birthday this year - so now an edition of the jubilees.
"Piz Nair", "fine dust", "dancing", "the noise in my head", "an object you don't want to sleep with" - these are titles of the new works of Not Vital. The series seems to be a motley crew. It is an anthology of cryptic stories, which are spreading here. Nature, surreal bon mot, wit: everything finds its place with the cosmopolitan artist from the Engadin. The horizon widens while looking at the works (in the sense of: the gradual processing of thought while looking). The graphics stimulate and possibly also excite, inspire, they send us on a journey, we stay on the spot and yet also become world citizens.

With the series "C12H" Not Vital pays homage to 12 great, unique, mostly very famous Swiss people - for the Edition VFO not in the form of sculptures as in earlier works, but as etchings. Graphically depicted are the birth dates of such illustrious personalities as the most exciting Bond girl of all time, Ursula Andress, the car manufacturer Louis Chevrolet, the clown Grock and the bicycle racer Hugo Koblet. The upper rectangle represents day and month, the lower one the year of birth. In the pictorial transposition of the date of birth of Anna Göldi (24.10.1734), for example, the upper rectangle measures 10 units lengthwise 24 and vertically, the rectangle below measures 17 units lengthwise 17 and vertically 34 units. The names of the Swiss are mirrored below the shapes. The presentation is not a simple homage, but one that must be read against the grain. The meeting of well-known names and the life data that are depicted has a playful and in part ironic effect, as in the great Alberto Giacometti, whose "pedestal" is the smallest - an insidious irony of numbers.

Five leaves are in the yellow folder "55" of Not Vital. It is printed on the outside in Arabic with "55" (reference to a picture format in the folder) and in Hebrew with "Good Morning". The artist spontaneously chose a Hebrew expression because many Jewish people live near the VFO. One surprise follows the other in the folder: A stepped building (aquatint with gold leaf), a mudflat (heliogravure), a building that rises (vernis mou), a cloudy building (heliogravure and aquatint), a blue mountain (monotype). The composition may seem disparate, but it is held together by a ribbon of overflowing imagination, blatant wit and precise aesthetics. It is Not Vital's first work for the VFO.
